Hero Animals: The Dog That Gave First Aid

  • Channel 5 - National Geographic

Episode 6 of 6-part series for Channel 5/National Geographic.

The Dog That Gave First Aid is a drama-documentary telling the moving story of how an 80-year-old man survived Hurricane Katrina thanks to his dog.

When Hurricane Katrina hit the southern coast of the United States in August 2005, it brought winds of up to 175mph strong, and devastating floods. As water levels rose, George Mitchell, 80, was left clinging to a floating mattress with his pet dog, Frisky.

Hours of treading water took their toll on George. Exhausted and soaked, he was drifting into semi-consciousness and ready to give up. But Frisky thought differently; every time George faltered, the dog was there with a nudge and a lick, bringing him back from the brink of death.
